The Refinishing Touch

Frequently Asked Questions

We have tried to cover below the most commonly asked questions that have been posed to us over the years. If your question is not answered, you may find the information you require in one of our blogs; otherwise call or e-mail us directly for further information.

Which areas do you cover?

We have a network of technicians covering most of England and Wales.

How long have you been in business?

The Refinishing Touch started life as an off shoot of the leading North American resurfacing company, Miracle Method, which was formed in 1979. Originally called Surface Doctor, we felt that there were too many Doctors, Medics and Surgeons repairing and restoring surfaces, so renamed our business. The current management has been in place for five years.

Are you insured?

We carry Public and Employee Liability Insurance as standard, and copies are available on request. We carry £5 million cover as standard.

Is resurfacing more cost effective than replacement?

The cost of resurfacing is generally a fraction of the true cost of replacement. While lower quality bathroom fittings and laminated work tops are cheap to buy, the costs of removal and disposal of the old bath, the plumbing and tiling, etc adds significantly to the total cost. Resurfacing can often save you up to 70% of the cost of replacement; repairs will save you even more.

Do resurfaced bathroom or kitchen fixtures look like new?

If the new surface is correctly applied using many of the techniques found in a car body shop, the bath or work top will look like new. The Refinishing Touch uses these techniques to achieve the effect of a smooth, “as new” finish.

How durable is one of our new surfaces and what guarantees do you give?

The Refinishing Touch uses the latest in bonding technology to molecularly fuse our high quality coatings to the original surface. Our finishes are designed to stand up to daily use and do not require special treatment, beyond the advice contained in our “Care and Cleaning” section. However, like any newly manufactured fixture or fitting, a refinished surface can be chipped or scratched if it is abused. We offer a five-year warranty against peeling or other failure of adhesion for baths and worktops, and one year for repairs. Click here for details of our Warranty Information.

Is resurfacing good for the environment compared to replacement?

No formal comparison of the environmental impact of replacement on the one hand, and repair and restoration of a surface on the other has been carried out to the best of our knowledge. However, logically, repair and resurfacing uses less energy, less raw material and reduces pressure on landfill.

How long does it take to resurface a bath or a work top?

A standard size bath, in reasonable condition, usually takes most of the day to be resurfaced. The bath is ready to use four hours after completion. A worktop usually will take 48 hours, as a special lacquer is applied over the water based stone fleck finish. This adds 24 hours to the process.

Can The Refinishing Touch fix chips and scratches?

Our technicians are trained to make repairs without the need to resurface the entire finish. We specialise in on-the-spot colour-matching to carry out repairs, which are virtually undetectable.

Does resurfacing have an odour?

There is an odour when the new finish is being applied. We use special ventilation fans to exhaust air from the work area into the atmosphere, minimising the smell of fresh paint. Any odours that might be created are substantially gone in a few hours.

Why choose The Refinishing Touch to repair or refinish a worn or damaged surface?

It is difficult to select a company to carry out resurfacing work, as all businesses will claim having superior skills or materials, some justifiably and other not! In the end, it comes down to having confidence in the company or individual you select. We suggest that you make this an informed choice. Ask questions of the companies or individuals that you are considering employing such as “Do they use materials specifically designed for the job? Do they carry insurance? Do they provide you with Method Statements and Risk Assessments for the work they carry out? Do they give you testimonials on request? How long have they been in business?” Ultimately, the choice is yours. Resurfacing is a great process provided that it is carried out with the right materials, technology and procedures.

How should I care for a refinished surface?

Surfaces, whether on a new bath or one that has been refinished, will have a long life provided that they are treated with care. When not in use, all surfaces prefer to be kept dry. Do not use harsh chemical or abrasive cleaners as they will dull the surface over time. We recommend that surfaces are cleaned regularly with mild detergents to prevent the build up of dirt and grease.
